I recently found out that I was misdiagnosed by Dr. Lam. I was referred to him for declining hearing in one ear only. I was diagnosed with idiopathic early onset unilateral presbycusis. Meaning premature age related hearing loss of unknown cause and was told my other ear would likely follow suit in time. This sounded like a vague catch-all diagnosis to me but I trusted his expertise.
My MRI was unremarkable, no findings of acoustic neuroma or demylation of the acoustic nerve but I was warned that I could be in the early stages of these possibilities and something might show up on a future MRI. So of course I've lived with that nagging worry in the back of my mind.
I've since moved away from Brantford and recently had a hearing re-assessment. The Audiologist was very surprised by my initial diagnosis. He showed me graphs that illustrated test results for different types of hearing loss and how my results don't present anything like age related hearing loss. I have cochlear sensorineural hearing loss which is caused by either genetics or a head injury. I have no family history of hearing loss but I was in an accident that gave me severe whiplash and knocked me unconscious for 3 days. Information Dr. Lam had at the time of my appointment including the fact that I was previously diagnosed with occipital/temporal neuralgia (on the same side as my bad ear) resulting from that accident. Dr. Lam never counselled me about the dangers of untreated hearing loss (cognitive impairment, brain atrophy etc). He was rather dismissive and didn't seem concerned.
I'm pleased to know that I no longer need to worry about a slow developing neuroma or early stage MS and I'm super excited to try my first hearing aid!!
Lesson learned.. trust your instincts, don't wait to seek a second opinion.

Henry is an absolute pleasure to work with. It’s obvious he cares more about helping patients over his bottom line. He puts his patients best interest first and really takes the time to listen and help out. I was a patient of Dr Lam and can say the same for him. Yes he is a busy guy and it takes a long time to get a referral but that is a OHIP issue and not his fault. Great service and a great pair of professionals. Thank you both.

Friendly staff & Dr.. I waited over 2 months to see Dr and for my appointment time i had to wait10 min. When Dr came he seemed rushed and v busy, didn't sit down, stood while he listened to me, and I didn't even get to explain everything. After he looked in my ear and took out some wax, he said wax could be what's causing problems and everything ok. I have to go see another Dr bc I still have some issues and discomfort. A follow-up visit would have been easier. Looking back I was excited for good news that I just left, now I wish I had the Dr ask if there was anything else he could he.
