I had an excellent experience today talking to Alanna at reception. She was friendly and efficient. Also, I got right through on the phone after maybe a 30 second wait. Dr. Michael Bayer has been very good to our family.

It’s next to impossible to get through on the phone, and booking are generally 1-2 months out for an appointment. This has been my doctor’s office my whole life, it’s sad to see how bad it’s become.

This has been my doctor's office for my entire life, and I have never been treated so rudely for absolutely no reason by a receptionist before. I walked in with my husband who had an appointment as I had to ask a question for myself regarding a request I put in for the doctor to send a referral for me. I asked the question nicely just for her to respond "well why don't you ask the doctor when you go into the appointment?" to which I simply replied that I wasn't going into the appointment as it was for my husband and not myself, she immediately snapped on me and went "oh wow okay, okay OKAYYY" which very much took me aback, it was such a rude and shocking way to respond and she completely attempted to cut me off while speaking. I then stated "I'm just telling you that I can't ask him as it's not my appointment to attend and I won't be in the room" and she once again said loudly and very rudely "OKAYYY" and then finally replied to my initial question. I thanked her and went and sat with my husband until he was called in, and left to wait in the car. I have seen all of the negative replies regarding receptionists at this clinic and have never understood it until today as any of the ones I have dealt with have been incredibly kind and wonderful at this job. Myself, my husband and other patients were baffled by this treatment. This receptionist, who has long brown hair and glasses, should not be working directly with patients if she cannot even conduct herself in a nice manner and snaps at them for absolutely no reason.

Whoever is answering the phone needs to leave the healthcare field.
I called to inform the clinic my family member had passed away & I was looking to cancel the appointment he had later this month. All the receptionist said was “okay great we’ll let the doctor know” and hung up before I could even respond. Couldn’t muster up a “sorry for your loss” or “my condolences to your family”. The lack of compassion was astounding and disgusting. “Okay great” is not an appropriate response to someone telling you their family member just died. I know death is a common occurrence in this field but it is important to maintain your empathy towards others..

Impossible to reach an actual person. Their voice messaging system is like reading through a thousand page deed.

My experience today was awful. Just awful. Nurse Tweedy’s lack of bedside manner, inability to listen, lack of respect, and shocking display of anger blew me away. After dismissing my experience with my symptoms at least 4 times in under ten minutes, she was furious that I couldn’t “let go” of her being 25 minutes late without apology. She announced we were finished and stormed out of the tiny office.
I didn’t even get the chance to say what else was bothering me; her constant and casual ability to dismiss my feelings and experience.
So, I drove the hour back home in shock.

I have always had an amazing doctor here, and received great, supportive medical care when it was needed. But this clinic historically has had issues with their office staff/how the office is run. I am thoroughly confused as to why, as they have had a few staff changeovers in the 26 years that I have gone here, and many of the ladies I have met have seemed quite nice when meeting them at the office initially.
It can be quite lengthy to get through to someone, and I have often been spoken to quite curtly, like I am inconveniencing them when trying to make an appointment or follow up on something that I've been told to follow up with. An example of this is one morning I called in to make a follow-up appointment as I was instructed to do, but called just after 8am, as I was going to be in meetings with my work from 8:30-4:30. I was told quite firmly that the 8-9am time was supposed to only be used for calls for same-day appointments, and to please respect that next time. I had never called that early before, with the exception of once during Covid (for a same-day appointment). All I knew is that the clinic hours listed them open at 8am, so I called when I could. I apologized, and told them that I would to call later next time, but after hanging up I was a little bothered at the way I was told this - especially when the information I had on the clinic didn't express this stipulation. I DO fully understand how busy they must get, and that they have to prioritize patients constantly, but some kindness or increased customer service skills might help improve their rapport with their patients.
That being said, I've been sitting in the office waiting room, and either heard personal information of someone on the phone quite clearly in the waiting room, or even heard the office staff's gossip while the phone kept ringing. Cobourg is a small town - I have often heard things about people that I knew, which is concerning.
Developing an online way to communicate some of the smaller things (ie: to inform of the need for a prescription renewal, or to let them know that you're checking in re: test results), or to book a general appointment would be helpful to both the staff and the patients - less people needing to call in might make things go a little smoother for the office staff? This would also be great for people who work business hours, who can only call in during times that the office is closed (ie: between 8-9am, over lunch hour, or after work is over). I am also aware that the building itself makes privacy for those in reception difficult, so something may need to be looked at to help with how sound carries into the waiting room area.
Again - the medical care I have received here HAS been fantastic. And the frustrations experienced don't happen at EVERY visit, but often enough for it to be seen as an issue/pattern.

Firing my doctor solely because of the terrible office workers and insane requirements to get an appointment. Only feel like answering te phone when it pleases them, absolutely useless office secretaries, been a problem for years, can't wait to finally be able to get a new doctor. New appointments. And actually visit a clinic for the first time in ten years. Absolute garbage business and medical practice.
