I am a small business owner in Guelph. I have been with Baker Tilly for several years. Earlier this year I was notified by CRA that my business was the subject of an HST audit. I have never been audited before and when I reached out to Baker Tilly for assistance I was told Ted Smith was on leave and was directed to another staff member to handle the audit. While the audit was ongoing I received a notice that Baker Tilly would see the audit through but due to capacity issues they were no longer able or willing to service my family or my business for taxation matters as they had done in the past. I went to the office and spoke to Todd Campbell who explained that since Ted was off they were having capacity issues and could no longer service all of their clients and that my business and my family had been vetted from their client list. I did not dispute this as I do not know their business well however upon completion of the audit I received a bill for $4633.00 which is far more than I have ever been billed by Baker Tilly in the past. What a parting gift !!! I spoke to other Baker Tilly customers who have experienced audits who were not billed anywhere near this much for similar services. I called Todd Campbell earlier today and later received a call back from Damien Condon. He was unable to provide me with a reasonable answer as to why such a hefty bill for these services. In spite of my complaint he was not willing to adjust the bill or provide a time sheet justifying the cost.
I have never in my life complained about the services of any company as I too have a small business. I feel that I am a reasonable person and feel that such a large bill is punitive towards a client they no longer wish to service. I would not recommend the services of Baker Tilly to any small business and will be sharing my experience with several of my friends who still utilize their services!
