Wow! Welcome to New Brunswick!
I moved from Ontario to the St John area earlier this year. I was born here and spent my summers here as a child. I’ve always loved this city and province.
Since I needed prescriptions renewed and didn’t have a doctor, I called 811. I was told by 811 that I would have to go to Urgent Care at St Joseph hospital as one of my medications is a benzodiazepine and nurse practitioners can’t prescribe it.
I went to St. Joseph’s Hospital, and I knew I would be last on the list to be attended to. I have worked in hospitals and understand that most needy get treated first. I understand that. I waited patiently in a cubical until I was to be seen. After waiting a few hours, Dr M. Philips opened the drape and the first thing she said was, "WHY DID YOU MOVE HERE WITH ALL YOUR HEALTH PROBLEMS"? There was no “hello” and no introduction at all, just a rude comment with a glare that showed her disgust with patients from out of province.
I was floored. What an ignorant and nasty way to approach a patient. She sat on the edge of the bed, looked at the pill bottles I brought and gave me a 6-month refill on everything but the benzodiazepine. She then chuckled and said, "this is way too much medication, I will give you one month". I asked what I was supposed to do when a month runs out. I don't have a doctor and I said to her, “as a PHYSICIAN you very well know I could have seizures if I stop this medication abruptly.” “I have been taking this for 30 years straight.” She told me to wean off it, got up and walked out.
At that moment, she knowingly put me in danger. If I run out of my benzodiazepine, I would have seizures. She (Dr M. Philips) and the hospital (St. Joseph’s) would have definitely heard from me if I was hurt or damaged in any way with seizures. How and why should any patient wean themselves off of a medication that their family physician has deemed to be medically necessary?
I was treated like a piece of garbage by this DR. M Philips. She went out of her way to humiliate me in front of St Joseph’s staff and any patients that may have heard this. Since this incident, it makes me question certain things about Dr M. Philips and St. Joseph’s Hospital. How does Dr M. Philips feel about new people arriving in Canada? What is Dr M. Philip's stance on the LGBTQ+ community? How does Dr M. Philips feel about people of colour coming into Canada? When someone opens their your mouth and makes stupid remarks like Dr Philips did to me, it makes you wonder what else this woman doesn't like.
When I opened the drape of my cubicle to leave, staff nurses etc were sitting there and obviously heard everything. I guess she (Philips) thought it would make her look important and smart to embarrass and humiliate someone in front of her co-workers. Well back on you. Maybe retirement is an option from you since you are so nasty to people Dr Philips.
I am disgusted that ST Joseph would hire this person. It goes to show what desperation for doctors does; it makes them scrape the bottom of the barrel and hire whatever they can. She (Dr Philips) should not be working with that attitude with people.
I got my medications from my former Toronto physician. He was not very happy with this "doctor". She (Philips) works in Sussex too BEWARE!
I notified Patient Care and they did what they could do.
