I've been seeing Dr. Macdonald for a few years now, but more regularly over the past year or so, and couldn't recommend her more. I was going through a rough time in 2021 (even taking some time off work due to mental health issues) and having Dr. Macdonald as part of my support team was invaluable. You can tell that she truly cares about your well being, and even offers stress management counselling as part of her practice. I would highly recommend trying her out for yourself. 🙂

I was impressed by Dr Macdonald’s dedication and enthusiasm when we discussed my son’s case over the phone. However, twice I asked for clarification of how costs would be determined, and twice I got no answer.

Looked at one way the cost would be about $990. But when looked at a different way, depending on how you define an allergy, the cost would double. It was a matter worth clarifying, but when my question was ignored – twice -- I felt this was a poor start and I decided to explore different options.

My story it seems is a very common one; who knew? I experienced bladder infections off and on long before I became an aging baby boomer. In 2018 I was experiencing urinary tract infections at an alarming rate. After 8 prescriptions for antibiotics in 9 months, I opted to take another path for treatment which lead me to Deidre Macdonald's door.

I Googled Naturopaths in the Comox Valley, read the reviews, then booked an appointment with Dr. Macdonald September 2018. I needed personal direction and as informative as Google was, it just wasn't enough. After I completed a very detailed medical profile for her to review, Dr. Macdonald recommended I undergo Vega testing which was done by a very personable technician in her clinic. The Vega testing exposed a very high level of Candida overgrowth no doubt exacerbated by repeated prescriptions of antibiotics. For me personally, I would have had no idea this condition existed at all no less at the level it did plus the testing showed quite a few allergies and food sensitivities I was completely unaware of.

My understanding was that the Candida overgrowth was contributing substantially to my immune system's inability to effectively combat the ongoing bladder infections. If I understand this correctly, my good gut bacteria was being destroyed both by the Candida and the ongoing antibiotic treatments, leaving my urinary tract system more prone to infection. This was a cycle I could well do without.

At Dr. Macdonald's direction, I reduced the Candida overgrowth dramatically by drastically reducing my intake of carbohydrates and sugar and by adding various supplements to help build up my resistance. I can't say I'm entirely clear of UTI's but I sincerely believe they will be dramatically reduced and hopefully a non-issue for me in the not too distant future. I now have a much better understanding of the changes I needed to make in my life in order to combat these frequent infections.

I feel very optimistic going forward and wish to thank Dr Macdonald for the thorough assessments and education provided to me. Yes some naturopathic supplements are a part of my new health regime. Better those than antibiotics. Oh and did I tell you I was able to email Dr. Macdonald between appointments with pressing questions and that she responded in a timely fashion? Wow is that refreshing or what!
