I don’t even know where to begin describing my recent experience at this hospital. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that the facility lacked basic cleanliness and organization. The halls were cluttered, the smell was unpleasant, and the overall environment felt chaotic. Unfortunately, this was only the beginning of a series of deeply troubling problems I came across.
To start, the staff’s behavior was unprofessional and dismissive. The nurses were often too busy talking amongst themselves to attend to patients or family members. They avoided making eye contact, seemingly as a way to avoid their responsibilities. And on one occasion, a staff member obnoxiously slammed a door in my face while I was standing in the hallway, as if they assumed I was trying to overhear their gossip. This level of disrespect was truly shocking and unnecessary. That being said, I did come across two staff members who were kind and compassionate. Nick, in particular, stood out for his professionalism and willingness to help. There was also a sweet Asian lady who showed genuine care, though I unfortunately didn’t get her name. So, thank you so much to the both of them.
The reason behind my visit was because my elderly family member was admitted to this hospital for a few days and I refused to leave them alone due to my lack of trust in patient care at hospitals. Sadly, my concerns were validated. First, my family member was placed in a room designed for two patients at most but was overcrowded with three. So when family members visited, the space was uncomfortably tight, making it difficult to provide support. Second, I noticed that the area where my family member was placed was heavily avoided by the nursing staff. When I had to use the call button for assistance, no one came—not even after I tried the call button on the adjacent bed. Frustrated, I went to the nearest front desk, only to find it unattended. This lack of responsiveness and attention was alarming and unacceptable.
The most egregious and inexcusable issue occurred on the third day, when my elderly family member was not changed for 12 hours! When I spoke to a staff member to get answers as to how this could've happened, one nurse claimed my family member had been changed at noon. However, one of my relatives had been with my family member since 11:30 a.m., confirming that what they had said was a blatant lie. Another nurse responded with, “there are good days and bad days,” which felt like a dismissive and inadequate excuse for such neglect. I understand that hospitals can be understaffed, but lying and making odd excuses does not justify this level of neglect. Maybe if they had a system in place and recorded their tasks, this would never have happened. The lack of empathy extended to other patients as well. The elderly patient next to my family member, who was clearly confused and afraid, was spoken to rudely and with a lot of attitude as well as being blatantly ignored by the same nurse that attended to her for the entire time I was there. It was heartbreaking to witness someone in such a vulnerable state being treated as less than human.
I want to emphasize that I did nothing to provoke this poor treatment. I was not asking for anything above and beyond—just basic care for my elderly family member. Unfortunately, even that seemed too much to ask. I stayed until 10 p.m. each night to ensure the nurses were actually doing their jobs, as I had no confidence in their ability to provide adequate care without supervision. The lack of a proper system and the overall absence of empathy were impossible to ignore. I left the hospital feeling deeply disappointed and frustrated. If you have the option, I strongly recommend seeking care at a different facility. If you must visit this hospital, I urge you to advocate for yourself or your loved ones and stay with them as much as possible, especially if they are unable to speak up for themselves. This level of neglect and unprofessionalism should never be tolerated.
