After having to be admitted twice within 24 hours to the emergency department of VGH. I experienced both the best and the worst of the system that we as Canadian citizens have to face when having to visit the emergency unit at the hospital. I had an ablation operation on Tuesday. When I got home, I was struggling to urinate and after trying for about five hours, I went into the emergency at VGH at 1 AM Wednesday morning for an Assistance. I was an extreme pain in discomfort and was seen only by the admitting staff, but no doctors attended to me until 5 AM where I was briefly interviewed by a doctor. He prescribed antibiotics and said it will clear up the urinary tract issue and prompted discharge me I was lonely till 7 AM when there was a staff change over And a nurse came in who had just begun her shift. If not for her it would’ve been a lot worse, she asked me for a urine sample did all the vitals and when I told her I wasn’t able to urinate, she was astounded. She promptly asked if anybody had done a scan of my bladder to ascertain the retention in the bladder. I said no the doctor didn’t do anything other than just prescribe antibiotics did no further examination and left with instructions for them to discharge me if not for this attentive nurse who was outstanding thorough I would’ve been sent home and had to be readmitted as it happened because of the water retention she spoke to the doctor And they conferred with the decision to put in the catheter to help relieve the bladder retention. I was discharged around about 2 PM on Wednesday morning and with a prescription which I went to full went home again at about 7 PM. I got up to go and have a shower as I have not showered since Monday night before the Ablation And I discovered that I was bleeding quite heavily in the groin area from the catheter insertion I was distressed to say the least that there was so much blood. The other way was full, so I went back to the emergency unit for the second time within 24 hours to be admitted again Arrived at 7 PM and was there till 1 AM before Dr came to see me. She examined me and explain the situation as to the reason of the bleeding as I was on blood thinners, and it would be more traumatic to do a catheter. I was just charged at 2 o’clock.

I must say that, despite waiting 5 to 7 hours for both occasions to be tended to buy a physician opinion at the healthcare system as we know is broken too much funding is going into management and hierarchy, and not providing adequate physicians and nurses to treat the high amount of patients in the emergency units.

In the UK they have removed two levels of management realizing that the funding in the UK is not going to write errors and this is exactly what it needs to be done here in Canada. You don’t need so many levels of management which are earning huge salaries at the expense of providing sufficient funding for doctors and nurses in all aspects of medical care so in summary the system gets a two out of five with Care because of the lack of personnel, therefore, is getting the brunt of it unfairly.

I had a good experience at Vancouver General Hospital’s emergency department. The staff was professional, kind, and provided excellent care. A special thanks to Ashly and the doctors, who were attentive and knowledgeable. My only concern was the long wait time, which was frustrating, but once I was seen, the medical team was efficient and caring. Despite the wait, I appreciate their hard work and dedication

Why do medical staff uniformly appear disheveled? I'm not referring to one individual, but rather a widespread issue. Uniforms are rumpled, like they've been through a war. Absolutely no ironing . I've even seen them wearing these uniforms outside work. What's going on with cleanliness standards?

Nurses genuinely don’t care, and the services takes 6+ hours for some simple suture strips. The Nurse literally just left to go take a nap after telling us she would be back. Hands down the most pathetic thing a hospital could do to a patient in need.

Dr Wilson is a very caring doctor.
Why not 5 stars? Well, the edwaittimes app is one thing but that only measures time to be seen by a physician. If there are issues with the CT scans then you're in for a much longer wait. And it's not great to sit for hours on a chair while you feel ill.

Really horrible place. From the rude sign in nurse to the rude rushed nurse and all others nurses working there. Completely devoid of any compassion. They talked to us like we were 5 years old getting scolded. I get they are overworked however they need to remember to speak with some compassion in their tone, not rudeness. Would literally never ever go back there. Completely ruined what I once thought was a top emergency.

The entrance guide kindly guided me to the entrance of the treatment room.
We waited 2~3 hours to receive first aid.
